Q&A: Wurl's Ria Madrid Talks New Content Intelligence Platform

Article Featured Image

On September 15, cloud-based FAST and CTV monetization platform Wurl launched its new content intelligence platform, an “enrichment enablement solution” designed to allow demand-side platforms (DSPs) to scale advanced targeting across CTV and directly connect streaming content intelligence with programmatic demand. According to Wurl, one of the key benefits of the platform is partnerships with integration partners that unlock 140 billion-plus monthly CTV impressions.

To get more context on the platform and how it’s likely to impact CTV's programmatic landscape, we reached out to Wurl Vice President, Advertising Partnerships Ria Madrid, for this Q&A.

Given that all of the integration partners you mention in the press release (Peer39, IRIS.TV, and KERV) supply contextual signals independently to DSPs, what does Wurl’s aggregation layer provide that a DSP wouldn’t get through direct integration with each of those providers? Is scale the biggest advantage, or are there other benefits?

Scale is a big part of it, and on top of that, interoperability. The industry has already built incredibly sophisticated capabilities across data, intelligence, and decisioning. We don’t need to rebuild what already exists; we need the infrastructure to make those capabilities work better together across CTV. That’s where Wurl comes in – we connect those signals with the content, inventory, and infrastructure needed to make them actionable across more of CTV. One integration gives DSPs access to more than 140 billion signal-rich impressions each month across more than 70% of ad-supported streaming inventory, without requiring buyers to navigate the complexity behind each individual connection.

The release mentions that Wurl has achieved “Bellwether” status in Jounce Media’s ranking of top CTV exchanges. Is that an assessment based on scale, or are there other criteria involved?

Jounce Media’s Bellwether designation is the highest confidence rating for programmatic advertising supply, identifying the top trusted global portfolios that meet strict standards for inventory quality and transparent supply chains.

The release mentions leveraging “object-level recognition” through KERV but does not specifically reference sentiment analysis. Is scene-level sentiment analysis or tone mapping part of the offering and if so, how is it modeled?

Yes. Wurl’s scene-level contextual targeting technology can analyze characteristics including genre and emotional context, while partners contribute their own differentiated signals and taxonomies (like KERV’s object-level recognition and precise ad-break targeting). Those signals can then be connected to the corresponding ad opportunity and made available for activation in the bidstream.

Does drawing on various contextual signal sources and analytical models for real-time bid requests add latency to the process, and does that in turn impact the timing of programmatic auctions?

No. We’ve been developing and optimizing this contextual workflow for years, so the enrichment happens in real time without meaningfully adding latency or impacting the timing of the auction.

Does Wurl provide an audit trail to advertisers so they can verify where their ads actually ran and which contextual signals influenced that placement?

Depending on how the campaign is executed, real-time or post-campaign delivery reporting is available for advertisers to understand the environment in which their campaign ran, as well as the corresponding signal(s) that influenced the decisioning for each impression served.

The release mentions “unique FAST audience intelligence” as a means of matching highly engaged viewers to particular types of content. Can you elaborate a bit on this viewership data and where it comes from?

Wurl powers thousands of FAST channels and orchestrates billions of hours of streaming viewership, giving us insight into how audiences engage with different types of content. That intelligence can help identify viewing behaviors and content affinities around specific programming, advertiser verticals, and major viewing moments like seasonal or tentpole content – adding another dimension alongside traditional audience targeting.

When you say that DSPs can “leverage Wurl’s contextual taxonomy to package and bring their own solutions to market,” is that API-level access, a white-label product, or another type of licensing model?

DSPs can use Wurl’s scene-level taxonomy white-label contextual offerings and customize it to their own buyer needs. The goal is flexibility: rather than requiring DSPs to adopt a single Wurl-branded solution or taxonomy, we can provide intelligence signals tailored to their own products and strategies.
