The Dalai Lama, who is considered to be the spiritual and political leader of 6 million Tibetans, begins a three-day tour of Utah on Thursday, May 10. Thanks to the streaming video his message will reach a global audience when he addresses Utah Valley State College (UVSC) on Saturday, May 12, 2001 in Orem, Utah. The address is scheduled for 2:30 (MST), and will be webcast live through the joint effort of The Utah Education Network (UEN) and Sorenson Media.

"While only a relatively small audience will actually be able to attend the address, through the wonder of modern technology we will make the message available in real-time to the entire world. This live Web stream of such an event is an example of Sorenson Media's mission to help people more effectively entertain, educate, and communicate over the Web through high-quality media.'' said Ed McGarr, vice president of sales and marketing at Sorenson Media in statement.

According to UEN, the event will be streamed at three different bit rates: 56K, 128K, and 300K, and there will also be a 16K audio-only stream. The event can be streamed though Windows media architecture at (www.uen.org) or (www.sorenson.com), which will provide additional viewing capacity to the UVSC's link at (www.uvsc.edu/broadcast/).

In addition to the UVSC address, he will also speak at the University of Utah and Abravanel Hall, both in Salt Lake City. Only the Dalai Lama's UVSC address will be made available to a worldwide audience via an Internet stream.
