Live streamed video is exploding in popularity, and one company is creating a service that helps publishers attract more traffic to live streams. Neon, a San Francisco, California-based startup, currently offers a service that automatically creates optimized thumbnails for on-demand video content, which makes the videos more enticing to viewers. Today, Neon is announcing Neon Live, which brings the same ability to live video streams.

Neon is pitching the service to sports, music, news, and politics publishers, as well as any company or brand that streams live events. Neon Live creates a fresh optimized thumbnail every minute, so potential viewers get an accurate view of what's taking place. Using the service will help attract more viewers, letting publishers stream more ads, the company says.

At next week's NAB conference, Neon will show how Neon Live works with Brightcove's live streaming platform. When the service launches, it will work with additional live video platforms that stream HLS video. The service will be available to exisitng Neon customers tomorrow, and to new customes in the next few months. The company wouldn't comment on pricing, only saying that it depends on the number of thumbnails created and the number of minutes of video processed.

“With an image thumbnail selected in real-time from live footage and optimized for viewer engagement, Neon Live brings this experience to the user from the second they come across live content or land on a publisher’s website,” says Sophie Lebrecht, Neon's CEO.
