Presenting the Best New Products of NAB 2014
Anyone looking for themes at the 2014 NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show currently underway in Las Vegas, Nevada, doesn’t have to look far. For the video-over-IP companies filling South Hall, it was the year of 4K, HEVC, and end-to-end video workflows.
4K video likely won’t have much impact on the streaming world in 2014 (beyond Netflix’s early adopter trial balloon), but the companies that offer video encoding and distribution solutions are ready for it, nonetheless.
While HEVC support is also early, exhibitors feel that it will play more of a role this year, since it offers bandwidth and storage savings for video at any resolution.
The StreamingMedia.com team saw more end-to-end video workflow solutions that we can count, or even remember. With the line between broadcast and IP video slowly blurring, broadcasters are looking for comprehensive solutions that handle ingest, usage rights, DRM, transcoding, multi-screen delivery, and much more -- or so vendors are saying.
We were surprised that three significant acquisitions all took place during NAB: Imagine Communications acquired Digital Rapids, Dalet acquired AmberFin, and All Mobile Video acquired AEG Digital Media. As the industry and its profits grow, we can all expect many more substantial mergers and acquisitions in the future.
Last year, StreamingMedia.com’s editors and contributors began honoring the NAB releases we found most impressive, and we’re continuing that for 2014. Here are our Best of NAB winners for 2014:
• Anvato: This end-to-end video service lets broadcasters of any size create TV Everywhere solutions without large upfront costs. It stood out for its simple GUI, cloud workflow, and range of features.
• Atomos Shogun: This is the first external 4K recorder for 4K interchangeable lens cameras like the Sony A7s and Panasonic GH4.
• Blackmagic Design Blackmagic Studio Camera: Our colleagues at Streaming Media Producer were impressed by this studio camera’s small size and 10-inch viewfinder.
• DDVTech MistServer: This modular media server runs any anything from a Raspberry Pi to a giant data server. At NAB, the company released a set of performance measurements that backed up its claims.
• Edelkrone Slider Plus Pro with Craft, Wizard, and Target Modules: This camera accessory can travel twice its length, and offers add-ons for motorized and repeatable parallax and time-lapse effects.
