BitTorrent Launches the First BitTorrent-Enabled TV
Starting today at the IFA show in Berlin, BitTorrent, Inc., and Vestel will show off the first BitTorrent-enabled television. Viewers will be able to find, share, and view files all from their TVs.
This product is a key step in BitTorrent finding a place in the living room. The company announced Project Chrysalis at CES 2011, a move to make BitTorrent part of home entertainment systems, and has since then revised its software to make it easier for home users.
BitTorrent plans to grow its partner ecosystem with Blu-ray and DVD drives, media extenders, NAS devices, and more TVs in the future. With the company's personal media sharing service, viewers will be able to share downloaded videos, photos, and audio tracks with their entertainment system.
The TV on display is a prototype created jointly. The two companies aren't saying when a finished TV might reach the market. IFA attendees can find the TV in Hall 8.2.
"Consumers want all types of personal media and Internet content in their living rooms, and the TV remains the most desired device for consuming this digital media," says Hakan Kutlu, deputy general manager for marketing at Vestel. "BitTorrent certification helps our TV line meet this consumer demand and ensures that Vestel products remain at the forefront of technology innovation and adoption."
