MPEG DASH Gains Crucial Support from Adobe

Giving the recently ratified MPEG DASH standard a needed boost, Adobe announced on Friday that its video lineup will add support for the emerging standard. MPEG DASH holds the potential of replacing Microsoft Smooth Streaming, Adobe Dynamic Streaming, and Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) with a unified standard that would allow publishers to create one set of files for all compatible devices. Adobe announced that it will support MPEG DASH across its entire line of streaming, playback, protection, and monetization solutions, including Adobe Flash Media Server, Adobe Access, Adobe Flash, Adobe AIR, and the Open Source Media Framework including Flash Media Playback and Strobe Media Playback. The move should help video producers reduce costs while making their videos more widely accessible. In a blog post, Kevin Towes, Adobe's senior product manager, said that MPEG DASH support will help companies simplify workflows, reduce storage costs, and streamline testing. Adobe is supporting the MPEG DASH ISOBFF live and on-demand profiles.
Supporting MPEG DASH doesn't mean that Adobe will drop support for its HDS format or for HLS, at least not for now.
Adobe isn't providing specific dates when it will add MPEG DASH support, but says that it will offer public demonstrations throughout the year. Other companies that support MPEG DASH include Microsoft, Qualcomm, Akamai, NDS, Envivio, Samsung, and Harmonic.
