Haivision Releases Makito X4 4K With 8 Core Encoding Engine
Stepping up from the original Makito and Makito X, video streaming tech company Haivision released the Makito X4 video encoder today. This version includes an 8 core encoding engine, and can output 4K video or four HD streams at 60fps. Buyers will also find up to 84 HD inputs (or 21 4K inputs) and 168 encoding cores in a single 4RU frame.
The company is pitching this model to studios that need live broadcast contribution and want to step up their remote productions. With ultra-low latency, this Makito is right for remote live interviews, the company says. It outputs HEVC/H.265 and AVC/H.264 live video with 4:2:2 10-bit color. Thanks to the company's Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) technology, it can push low-latency streams over public internet connections. It also has low power requirements, using under 30 watts per encoder blade and under 8 watts for each HD stream.

Look for the Makito X4 to go on sale in April.
Haivision is using the Azure global network to stream live video from point to point, while Telestream's cloud processing option finds a home with Azure.
The SRT protocol, which can provide latency at 500ms, is going open source. The SRT Alliance encourages developers to contribute improvements.
