Gartner Releases 2016 Enterprise Video Magic Quadrant

Article Featured Image

Gartner's 2016 ranking of enterprise video content management systems is out, and this year Brightcove, Kaltura, MediaPlatform, Panopto, and VBrick all rank as leaders in the field. The report looked at 15 companies and evaluated them on a combination of completeness of vision and ability to execute, sorting them visually on the graph—what Gartner calls is "magic quadrant"—published below. The graph separates the companies into four categories—leaders, challengers, visionaries, and niche players.

Perhaps reflecting the continued maturation of the market, this year's quadrant contains 5 companies ranked as leaders, whereas only 3 landed there in 2015 and 2014, and only 2 in 2013. Kaltura and Panopto are the only companies selected as leaders for the last 4 consecutive years. The total number of platforms analyzed is down 2 from the 2015 total of 15. Lexmark was dropped this year because it has narrowed its focus to healthcare clients, whereas Ramp now partners with other vendors, according to Gartner.

HaivisionVidizmoAgile Content all showed increased ability to execute and so moved from the niche players to challengers sector, while Sonic Foundry moved from challenger to niche player, and Qumu dropped from leader to challenger.

Gartner defines enterprise video content management as "software, appliances, or software as a service (SaaS) intended to manage and facilitate the delivery of one-to-any, on-demand video across internet protocols," with an emphasis on internal video delivery over external publishing.

Kaltura and Panopto are making the full report, including a list of strengths and cautions for each company, available for free download behind a registration page.
