Sonic Foundry Set to Unleash New Mediasite Recorders, Server

A "completely overhauled" video editor is also included, according to Pollard. He said that, in addition to a timeline-based view and various usability enhancements, the new editor will allow users to cut from the middle of the video in addition to the beginning and the end. Users can also add fades and other effects.

"It’s also pretty impressive in terms of its simplicity," Pollard said. "Our goal is to not have people using the editor, to be honest, because we want people to generate tons and tons of content."

The new recorders will also allow users to capture any VGA presentation source through a Digital Video Interface input and use VGA pass-through to redirect incoming image signals to other devices, among other new features.

Making the Switch
In order to facilitate the switch from Mediasite 4.3 to the 5.0 series, the company will be providing a utility allowing its customers to run two servers, one 4.3 and one 5.0, side-by-side, allowing them to use their recorders with either server set, Schmidt said. In addition, while the company will be putting its earliest line of recorders out to pasture with the new release, the current series of recorders will still work with the new version.

"We realize there’s a certain amount of time involved when people are doing server migrations," Schmidt said. "We go out of our way to be as solid and as friendly as we can during those times."

He said the product enhancements were made with the company’s two main tenets in mind: Don’t change the way the presenter presents, and get video to the consumer as fast and with as little post-production as possible.

"When we move forward, we’re always trying to basically shorten that time from presenter to person viewing it and making it as clear and as accurate as we possibly can, and I think that’s what kind of drives us," he said.

How to Get It
Schmidt said old and new customers alike will be able to download the Mediasite software via Sonic Foundry’s SmartServe portal at www.sonicfoundry.com/support. Mediasite EX Server pricing starts at $19,950, the recorders start at $22,250 with volume discounts available, and hosting is available with monthly pricing that varies based on concurrent viewers, the number of content hours, and the duration of the hosting contract.
