Encoding.com Now Supports Ogg Theora and WebM

The online encoding service Encoding.com has expanded its portfolio of formats with two that get a lot of coverage, although not all that much actual use: WebM and Ogg Theora. That means that content creators can now use one-click presets to convert videos to the formats supported across all the HTML5 browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. They can also stream to mobile devices including the iPhone and iPad, Android, Blackberry, Nokia, and Samsung.

Encoding.com already provided a preset for H.264, the most popular HTML5 video format. Both of the new additions, Ogg Theora and WebM, use the Vorbis Audio codec.

"While the new HTML5 standard provides exciting new features for presenting content on the Internet, its inherent openness for multiple video and audio codecs, and lack of unified standards across browsers, also adds complexity for content providers," says Jeff Malkin, Encoding.com's president.
