Envivio Partners with 1 Mainstream for Cloud End-to-End Solution

All-in-one cloud workflows, 4K, and HEVC dominate the announcements and discussions at the 2014 NAB conference, and video-over-IP company Envivio is squarely on trend. The company is showing off its just-announced turnkey cloud-based video service, which it created with partner 1 Mainstream.

The turnkey service is designed for content holders that want to launch new services quickly, in weeks rather than months, says Envivio president, CEO, and founder Julien Signès. Envivio is handling encoding and encryption, while 1 Mainstream is responsible for app-creation, billing, and integration.

“We’re quite excited about the cloud thing,” says Signès.

Customers could include larger organizations that want to create an app for a specific event, such as the Olympics, or smaller organizations looking to establish a presence online. The solution lets them launch on platforms that include Apple TV, Xbox, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, iOS, Android, and Samsung connected televisions. BSkyB is the reference customer for this service, and has already been using it. Signès describes BSkyB as one of the few companies making money from OTT video. The solution works with both live and on-demand content.

While everyone at NAB seems to be announcing a cloud workflow, Signès notes that the offerings mostly involve porting offline products to the cloud. That’s what Elemental and Harmonic have done, he says, adding that he doesn’t see the usefulness in it. What Envivio debuted is a more integrated solution, he says.

“We think there’s much more value in that,” Signès says.

Envivio says the turnkey solution has a “pay-as-you-grow model,” so that the service scales up as usage grows.

Envivio announced its own 4K HEVC support last week, but Signès believes it won’t see much adoption in 2014. “Personally, I think it’s more next year’s business,” he says. While many in the industry wonder if 4K will be another 3D (a non-starter), Signès is excited about it. He’s even more enthusiastic about using HEVC for existing services to reduce costs. 4K, though, will take more time than people think to find support, he says. Consumers won’t want to upgrade new HD TVs.
