Livestream Updates iPhone App with Emphasis on Content Discovery

Live video specialist Livestream has "reimagined" its iPhone app and released an updated version today. The free app emphasizes access to millions of ad-free live events from the new Livestream platform. That live content includes over 25 local U.S. new stations. Livestream members can use it to broadcast directly from their iPhone or iPad, although that isn't a new feature.

Social networking takes center stage in the revamped app, which is officially version 3.0. The revamped app include improved search options for live events, and lets users chat, like, comment on, and share the videos they're watching. It offers filters for video broadcasting, and Livestream promises "ultra-stable" adaptive streaming over Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G networks. The app works as a remote control for Livestream Broadcaster clients, which also is not a new feature.

Livestream offers free access to on-demand content from the app. Archived content includes New Year's Eve footage from Times Square, red carpet coverage from the Academy Awards, and Fashion Week video. The company promises more free events to come, including formula drift racing and National Rugby League games.

To make way for the revamped app, Livestream changed the name of its previous Livestream app to Original Livestream. It's meant for content on the original platform, and doesn't offer broadcasting.
