Sorenson Releases Squeeze 8.5 at Streaming Media East

Article Featured Image

Speed is the key word for Sorenson's latest release, unveiled at the Streaming Media East conference in New York City. Squeeze 8.5 averages encoding times 200 percent faster than version 8, the company claims.

The increase comes from a re-architecting of Squeeze that lets it break decoded and compressed video files into chunks, then encode them simultaneously across multiple CPUs. This parallel processing works with single output files transcoding to major formats (including MP4, QuickTime, WebM, and Matroska) and adaptive bitrate encoding.

Sorenson has worked with Intel to optimize Squeeze 8.5 to bring extra gains to Windows owners with Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors, as well as others using Intel's Quick Sync platform. Sorenson finds an additional doubling of speed gains in these systems.

A helpful slider control in Squeeze 8.5 lets owners choose how much of their CPU to devote to encoding, up to 100 percent.

In a first for the product, Squeeze 8.5 owners will get 5GB of free online storage, which they can tie into their workflows, uploading and distributing encoded files from the cloud.

"Our customers have spoken, and we have responded to deliver the ‘thunder and lightning' they were looking for," says Peter Csathy, Sorenson's CEO. "The thunder is the best-ever Squeeze feature set, which makes the encoding, transcoding, production, and collaboration workflow better and easier than anything else in the market. The lightning is the unprecedented speed that enables users to get the highest-quality video content to their desired destinations in record time."

As a promotion for Streaming Media readers and conference attendees, Sorenson is currently offering Squeeze 8 Pro for $200 off, and Squeeze for $160 off.
