Microsoft Licenses Jinni for Personal Video Discovery

Jinni Media, a Tel Aviv, Israel-based company that creates video discovery software, announced that Microsoft has licensed its Semantic Discovery Engine and Entertainment Genome.

The engine was created to help viewers find video content that they'll enjoy, and includes a set of over 2,000 tags that describe the mood, plot, and style of a program or movie. Jinni describes the software as intuitive and able to work on any screen.

Microsoft hasn't announced how it will put the engine to use, but speculation is that it will power movie discovery on the Xbox. The Xbox already enjoys broad support, and this could be part of an effort to increase its appeal as a streaming video provider for living room viewing.

Jinni's engine lets viewers find content based on their mood or the plot or style they're interested in. It can also create personalized recommendations based on a complex understanding of that viewer's tastes. It includes social features for finding friends with similar tastes.
