ActiveVideo Files Injunction Against Verizon

Earlier this month, ActiveVideo won a $115 million patent infringement lawsuit against Verizon (Verizon has promised an appeal). On Friday, ActiveVideo filed an injunction to prevent what it sees as the unlawful use of its intellectual property.

In its suit, ActiveVideo alleged infringement on four patents related to interactive television services and video-on-demand:

  • United States Patent No. 6,034,678, titled "Cable Television System With Remote Interactive Processor"
  • United States Patent No. 5,550,578, titled "Interactive And Conventional Television Information System"
  • United States Patent No. 6,100,883, titled "Home Interface Controller for Providing Interactive Cable Television"
  • United States Patent No. 6,205,582, titled "Interactive Cable Television System with Frame Server"

"The decision of the court to uphold our intellectual property rights was very clear," says Jeff Miller, president and CEO of ActiveVideo Networks. "We insist that Verizon immediately cease its unlawful use of the patented technology developed by the employees and investors of ActiveVideo Networks."

For its part, Verizon has promised to fight the injunction, which it sees as groundless. It filed an appeal on Friday to put a hold on the injunction until its appeal is heard in court.

"There is a no basis for an injunction," Verizon spokesman Ed McFadden said to the website FierceCable.
