How to Encode Video for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch

Instructor (and StreamingMedia.com contributor) Jan Ozer barely paused to take a breath in his Streaming Media East tutorial entitled "How To: Encoding Video for iDevices."

Guiding his audience through a breakneck 45-minute session, he presented everything video publishers need to know to deliver to Apple iOS devices, including the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

Ozer's topics included MPEG-4 audio profiles and preparing video so that it can be seen by all devices. He discussed how to customize the settings for different types of content and showed what settings premium music and video publishers are using when formatting their own material.

Later in the talk, Ozer explained transmuxing technologies, adaptive streaming, and HTTP Live Streaming. Throughout the talk, he discussed the advantages of various popular encoding tools.

For those streaming to Apple devices, this is one to bookmark. Scroll down to view the presentation below and download Ozer's presentation materials.

Then, it shares the strategies used by prominent iTunes publishers to serve the complete range of installed iDevices. Next, the seminar switches to cellular wireless delivery, with a technical description of Apple's HTTP Live Streaming, including recommendations for the number of streams and Apple's encoding parameters. The seminar concludes with a review of encoding options for HTTP Live Streaming and techniques for serving multiple target platforms such as Flash and iDevices with one set of encoded H.264 files.
