Finally, Yahoo has some good news to report from its video operations. The company that recently divulged it lost $42 million on Community and other online originals streamed the NFL Buffalo Bills/Jacksonville Jaguars game live yesterday to a global audience of 15.2 million unique viewers. Yahoo delivered 33.6 million streams during the game.

The Bills/Jaguars game took place at Wembley Stadium in London. In total, Yahoo streamed 480 million minutes of playtime. One-third of the streams went to viewers outside the U.S. in 185 countries. Yahoo boasts that its streams had an average rebuffering ratio of under 1 percent, and that it delivered 8.5 petabytes of video. Over 30 brands bought advertising commitments, selling out all ad inventory.

In a blog post, open caching specialist Qwilt notes that "while initial reports of game streaming quality were mixed, quantitative measurement of average bit rate (ABR) in North American markets where Qwilt is deployed suggest solid Quality of Experience (QoE) results."

The Jaguars won the close high-scoring game 34-31.

During next month's Streaming Media West conference in Huntington Beach, California, Omer Luzzatti, senior director at Yahoo and head of the company's video platform, will explain how his company pulled off this event. Read StreamingMedia.com's article about the keynote.

The NFL's first experiment with video streaming was back in 1999, when a season was streamed to fans in Europe and Singapore.
