CNN Funds Launch of Great Big Story, Video Site for Millennials

Article Featured Image

Great Big Story, a video site aimed at young adults, launched yesterday with multi-year financial assistance from CNN. While it’s being billed as a news site for millennials, there’s no actual news on it. Instead, Great Big Story presents interesting compact stories—three to five per day—that are well produced and provide a little bit of information on curious topics.

The delivery mechanism is the real story here, as Great Big Story is designed to distribute videos to the platforms and apps that young adults already use, encouraging social sharing. Besides the website, Great Big story will offer iOS and Android apps, and distribute videos on Facebook, YouTube, Apple News, Snapchat, and other sites. It will also stream to the living room with Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, and Chromecast devices. The distribution network should take shape by next month.

Great Big Story will show ads in the form of branded videos, in which a sponsor takes part in the content of a video. Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Kind Snacks have signed on as charter sponsors. The site doesn’t intend to offer pre-roll or display advertising.

“It was conceived as a way to reach new audiences in new ways, with an authentic and original voice,” co-founder Andrew Morse told AdWeek.
