How to Select a Cloud Encoder, Learn the Different Types
For companies looking to push their video encoding offsite, the first step is learning the various types of cloud encoders available. At the recent Streaming Media West conference in sunny Huntington Beach, California, StreamingMedia.com contributor Jan Ozer gave a master class is cloud encoding.
"There's a lot of different encoding models for cloud encoding," Ozer began. "One end of the spectrum—any encoding tool could be a cloud encoder, right? Because you can lease your own cloud computer and then install an encoder up there, and then you've got a cloud encoder. So that's one end of the spectrum where you could install Apple Compressor in a cloud instance and then that would be cloud computing."
While that's a possibility, that's not what most people think of when they talk about cloud video encoding.
"The more traditional application is software-as-a-service, and this is where you upload your file to a service and they handle everything," Ozer said. "You do nothing but upload a file—here's your encoding presets and they produce for you. This is the biggest category. A lot of direct companies—Encoding.com, Zencoder. There are some that are starting to integrate with Amazon to become an Amazon service, so you buy the service from Amazon like you would other functions, and that's Telestream Vantage's approach."
