Sorenson Offers Live Video Encoding in the Cloud

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Sorenson Media unveiled its newest offering, a cloud-based encoding platform for live video called Squeeze Live. Created in partnership with Kulabyte, the service offers high-volume live video encoding for distribution to any computer or mobile device.

The service combines Sorenson's experience in video encoding with Kulabyte's knowledge of live HD and mobile video streaming. Squeeze Live, currently in beta, is designed to eliminate the need to prepare and upload multiple versions of live events on-site. With the service, live video first passes through a front-end encoder on-site. That encoded stream is then sent to the cloud for real-time encoding to multiple formats and bitrates. The resulting streams are optimized for playback on TVs, desktops, laptops, iOS devices, BlackBerries, Android devices, and others. The various streams are then delivered to the owner's CDN (content delivery network) for streaming.

Target markets for Squeeze Live include sports events, award ceremonies, conferences, breaking news events, and presentations.

"We are delighted to be working with Kulabyte to harness the power of the cloud and produce the most intuitive, scalable, and cost-effective live streaming encoding solution ever brought to market," says Peter Csathy, president and CEO of Sorenson Media. "Squeeze Live is an elegant solution to the stubborn, thorny and expensive problem of encoding and delivering numerous live video outputs. There is nothing else like it in the marketplace."
