Ooyala Launches Paywall Service
For video publishers looking to create more revenue from their content, online video platform Ooyala has launched Ooyala Paywall. The service works for both live events and video-on-demand, and is easy to set up through Ooyala's Backlot video publishing platform.
Using the simple administrative controls, users can set the price of a video, the number of views that purchasers are allowed, and the rental period. They can also customize the preview window, meaning how long viewers can watch before they're asked to pay. Finally, they can brand the payment system by adding their own logo.
Payments are handled through PayPal and require a credit card.
One advantage of the system is that video publishers are free to choose the rental conditions for their videos. They can sell a day pass, which is popular for sports events, or sell just one viewing. They can also set a period of time for the rental, either for hours or days. Publishers can then offer their content on third-party sites, creating a revenue-share system with those sites' owners.
The paywall service is targeted to those in the media, sports, and education businesses.

"The Ooyala Paywall makes it extremely easy for media companies to launch paid online video, with a system similar to iTunes and the YouTube video store," said Bismarck Lepe, president of product at Ooyala.
In a multi-year deal, Yahoo! Japan will rely on Ooyala's platform for video delivery, subscription, and advertising services, and will re-sell it as a white label service.
Delivery option lets content providers reach viewers in their living rooms.
Investment will help the online video platform move beyond the U.S. and Europe into Asia, and brings total investment in Ooyala to $42 million
Customers can now add YouTube videos directly and monitor their performance.
