MyEye and Rhinobird.tv Look for Their Share of the Live Market

It might seem like the live mobile video streaming market is a two horse race, with Periscope battling Meerkat, but new arrivals are looking to build an audience. MyEye, a U.K. startup that offers an iOS and Android app, has announced that David Beckham is both an investor and a brand ambassador to the company. Beckham will be using MyEye exclusively. TechCrunch reports that MyEye has raised around £2 million in total investments. The app is a free download, and videos shot and shared with MyEye disappear after 72 hours.

“I’m always looking to back and support British businesses that have the ability and vision to do something truly transformational on the global stage, and I believe that MyEye has the potential to change the way people interact through social media," Beckham said in a statement.

Another competitor is Rhinobird.tv, which recently launched in public beta. Rhinobird.tv can work through a browser, so users don't need an app. It offers an Android app, however, with an iOS app on the way later this year. The creators emphasize that Rhinobird.tv streams have no latency (Periscope and Meerkat streams can lag by 20 seconds, they say) and that live streams can be shared to any platform via an embeddable link.

As new competitors crop up, it feels like usage is already slowing on Periscope and Meerkat. It remains to be seen whether or not the live mobile video market can sustain interest, and, if so, how many competitors can carve out a niche.
