Mobile Video Now One-Third of All Video Plays, Says Ooyala Report

Online video technology and services company Ooyala has released its Video Index Report for the third quarter of 2014, revealing that video views on smartphones and tablets now make up 30 percent of all video plays. Compared to the same period in 2013, that shows a rise of over 200 percent. Compared to the same period in 2012, it's a rise of over 400 percent.

News and sports videos are the most popular types for mobile viewing. Sporting events in July, August, and September included the World Cup, Wimbledon, Tour de France, British Open, U.S. PGA Championship, U.S. Open Tennis, and the Ryder Cup, all of which gave mobile video traffic an extra boost.

"Broadcasters and publishers who are making content rapidly available on mobile are benefiting from the near ubiquity of video-capable smartphones and tablets in mature markets," the report notes. "Particularly for news and sports content, audiences are increasingly engaging with content outside of the home."

In its report for Q1 of 2014 Ooyala predicted that half of all video views would come from mobile devices by 2016. It has now revised that prediction, and says half of all video views will take place on mobile devices by the third quarter of 2015.
