LinkedIn Streams Live, Beta Video Service Starts This Week

While business networking site LinkedIn only began offering native video in the summer of 2017, it's been transformational to the site, greatly changing the experience. Soon, LinkedIn will take the next step and debut live video with an offering called LinkedIn Live. The service will start in beta this week, giving select people and businesses the ability to reach their contacts in real-time over the platform, and will work on both desktop and mobile. Look for it to be used to stream conferences, expert advice, news interviews, and any event companies want to take public.

LinkedIn is all about making contacts, so it's bringing in a few key partners for LinkedIn Live. It will work with several live video specialists—including Wowza Media Systems, Switcher Studio, Wirecast, Socialive, and Brandlive—to help creators post attractive live videos. The company promises to announce additional third-party partners in the coming weeks.

LinkedIn owner Microsoft will also be a part of this, but not as deeply as some might have expected. Microsoft's Azure Media Services will provide the encoding for the live video. There's no Skype integration yet.

Video has already delivered a big ad boost for LinkedIn, TechCrunch reports. It notes that video led to longer viewing times and higher ad viewing numbers. At launch, LinkedIn Live won't contain video ads, but that will change at some point in the future.
