Global Average Connection Speed Reaches 5.0 Mbps, Says Akamai
Akamai released its State of the Internet report for Q1 2015, and found that the global average connection speed reached 5.0 Mbps for the first time. That's a 10 percent increase over the previous quarter's average.
The report is always a fascinating read for the raw data it offers. South Korea again leads the world with the highest average connection speed, 23.6 Mbps. Ireland jumped into second place with 17.4 Mbps (a 37 percent increase over the previous quarter). After that comes Hong Kong, Sweden, the Netherlands, Japan, Switzerland, Norway, Latvia, and Finland. The U.S. came in 19th with an average speed of 11.9 Mbps.
In South Korea, 77 percent of households enjoy speeds greater than 10 Mbps, 58 percent have greater than 15 Mbps, and 31 percent have greater than 25 Mbps. That last one is a new metric for Akamai's report. It notes that 4.6 percent of all IP addresses connect to Akamai at speeds of 25 Mbps or greater.
Year-over-year, all U.S. states saw average broadband speeds increase, and nearly all had double-digit gains. Delaware leads with the fastest average connection speed (18.6 Mbps). That's followed by Virginia, the District of Columbia, Utah, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. Delaware has the highest number of connections above 15 Mbps —44 percent—but that's still less than half, That shows that mainstream 4K streaming is still a ways off.
The report also looks at mobile connection speeds, and found that the U.K. has the highest average connection speed with 20.4 Mbps.
