Brightcove Expands TV Everywhere Support with Adobe and Akamai

Signaling the rising future of TV Everywhere (TVE) and the importance of making viewer authentication easier, cloud publishing and distribution company Brightcove today announced that it is expanding its support for TVE. It's doing so by integrating with Adobe Pass and Akamai Sola Vision Identity Services, which both offer viewer authentication for web- and app-delivered content.

This isn't Brightcove's first TVE offering, of course. It previously offered Adobe Pass support focused on web delivery. What the company is seeing now is that consumers want greater access to premium video through laptops, tablets, and other devices, so it's expanding its TVE support to address that.

Brightcove's Adobe Pass support now offers more flexible customization options to customers, letting them create better authentication experiences.

"One of the reasons we invested some additional engineering in our Adobe Pass integration is that programmers recognize that TV Everywhere authentication has not been the easiest way to manage consumer adoption," says Phil Costa, director of product management at Brightcove.

Brightcove is offering web-based TVE authentication for both platforms starting today, with support for its native player SDKs (software development kits) for iOS and Android devices coming later in the year.

"As an industry, I think we have more work to do to simplify the user interface of authentication to access content," says Costa. He notes that his company has a strong interest in making it easier for consumers to get the content it delivers. Many players are involved in TVE, he adds, and getting the pieces lined up correctly can take some time.
