Blinkx Introduces TV API
In an effort to make accessing its content easier, video search engine Blinkx has launched a TV API (application programming interface) today. The API can be used by connected TV developers to access Blinkx's library of over 35 million hours of online video. The API is available for TVs, set-top boxes, apps, and game consoles.
Developers don't need to worry that the API will turn up content that doesn't play on the host device, because logic built into the API filters content based on the capabilities of the user's device.
The execs at Blinkx hope the API will help the company extend its footprint to more screens and drive millions of new searches. This isn't the company's first foray into the connected TV space, as it already has partnerships with Amino Communications, Belgacom, and Miniweb.
"The Blinkx Web API was launched five years ago and today accounts for two-thirds of our global search volume, but mobile and TV are coming on strong," says Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO of Blinkx. "Providing an API for TV brings Blinkx into the living-room and enables our partners to tap a flourishing audience as more consumers access Web video from their TVs. In addition to search, our technology offers personalization, discovery, and recommendation capabilities to integrate Web video into the connected TV experience-functionality that's critical in the lean back TV experience, when users are less inclined to type out search queries."
Video search site benefits from over 1,500 curated news videos from a variety of sources.
Free app offers video search, as well as four editorially-chosen content channels.
Boxee fans will soon be able to search Blinkx content or view three curated channels.
Exclusive red carpet coverage and celebrity interviews are now available from the video search engine.
Viewers will be able to search over 600 daily weather clips to get local or international reports.
