BBC Gets into Streaming

BBC (www.bbc.co.uk) announced that it is getting into streaming and Web hosting, forming a new subsidiary called BBC Technology Limited. BBC Technology will offer broadcast and digital media technologies including Web hosting, streaming delivery, broadcast services, consulting and more.

Clients who have already invested in BBC Technology products and services include Fox Television Network and DirecTV. Fox has commissioned a study concerning media asset management, while DirecTV is adopting BNCS, a system that has already established a strong reputation among European broadcasters. In addition, CyberStar has signed up for a 10megabit uplink for IP streaming, to support its digital video broadcasting services.

Philip Langsdale, chief executive of BBC Technology, said in a statement: "We are very pleased that BBC Technology has got the government's go-ahead and can now set about offering our expertise to companies wanting to use digital technology to improve their communications. With our track record at the heart of one of the largest and most complex broadcasting systems in the world, I am certain BBC Technology will prove an irresistible proposition to businesses across the globe."

The BBC announced its was forming BBC Technology in July 2000. According to the company, it will have about 1,350 employees.

The company will be a commercial subsidiary of the BBC and won't be subsidized by the license fee.
