At yesterday's Content Delivery Summit, the issue of operator growth in the Netflix Era was discussed at length.
How bad is Netflix affecting the service provider network? One example given was a service provider, planning out its bandwidth budget, being overwhelmed by the Christmas rush of new over-the-top video-equipped devices.
The rush depleted its calendar year budgeted bandwidth by March.
While service providers are rolling out their own CDNs, that solution takes 12 to 18 months. What to do in the meantime? The Peer App representative suggests putting transparent caching out at the edge.
