Softvelum brings the first live streaming fMP4 HLS implementation to media market

Softvelum LLC, the maker of media streaming tools, introduces new capabilities of Nimble Streamer to make it the first software media server to support fragmented MP4 in HLS for live AVC and HEVC streaming.

Vladivostok, Russia(01 Nov 2017)

Recently Apple announced the support for fragmented MP4, or fMP4, in HTTP Live Streaming protocol. This allows the content to be played in HLS without the need for the traditional MPEG-2 Transport Stream container. Currently proper support for fMP4 is available in latest versions of Apple's operating systems - iOS 11, macOS High Sierra and tvOS 11. So as viewers have appropriate devices with latest OS updates, content providers can use full power of new HLS for live streaming.

Softvelum is proud to announce its flagship product Nimble Streamer to be the first software media server which has full support for fMP4 in HLS for live streaming scenarios. Nimble Streamer is a high performance software media server available on x64, ARM and Power8 architectures for all popular OSes.

Nimble Streaming transmuxing engine allows processing incoming RTMP, RTSP, MPEG2TS, SRT and UDT streams into a fully compliant HLS stream with fMP4 container. This allows delivery of HEVC/H.265 and AVC/H.264 to all compatible devices. The transcoding package gives full capabilities for AVC and HEVC content transformation including decoding, flexible dynamic filtering and further high performance encoding.

Yury Udovichenko, Softvelum, CEO: "The introduction of fragmented MP4 in Apple products opens a variety of new use cases for AVC and HEVC content and provides more diversity to streaming media ecosystem. Softvelum always strives to implement the best available technologies to give our customers full freedom of choice."
