Streaming Learning Center has released SLC Bitrate Explorer, a video file analysis tool for encoding engineers and QA teams that consolidates into a single application the workflows that previously required multiple tools, manual spreadsheet work, or were skipped entirely due to friction.

The tool supports H.264, HEVC, VP9, and AV1 files and runs on Windows and Mac.

The release addresses a gap that has existed since the original Bitrate Viewer was abandoned. That tool, still widely referenced in encoding workflows, supports only H.264 and is no longer maintained. SLC Bitrate Explorer supports every FFmpeg-compatible codec and adds capabilities that go well beyond bitrate visualization.

The feature set covers eight analysis areas.

  • File Intelligence goes deeper than MediaInfo, detecting encoding preset, GOP structure, B-frames, reference frames, and rate control parameters, showing only settings that differ from defaults for x264 and x265 files encoded with FFmpeg.
  • File Compare puts multiple files side by side in a single view with a Show Deltas Only mode that eliminates matching parameters and surfaces only what changed.
  • The Bitrate Chart supports multiple files overlaid on the same chart with per-second, GOP, and per-frame views.
  • Frame Type visualizes I, P, and B-frame distribution across the entire file with bitrate and VMAF overlaid.
  • The Metrics tab runs VMAF, PSNR, and SSIM simultaneously across all loaded files in a single pass, with results verified to within 0.01% of MSU VQMT.

The BD-Rate tab automates Bjøntegaard Delta Rate calculation, the definitive measure of codec efficiency. Building BD-Rate manually in Excel is tedious enough that most practitioners skip it. SLC Bitrate Explorer loads a reference file and encode ladder, groups files by codec automatically, and produces rate distortion curves and a BD-Rate matrix in minutes.

The Breakeven tab translates BD-Rate results into a business decision. Enter the CDN cost per GB, encoding cost per minute, and projected viewing hours, and the tool calculates how many viewing hours it takes for bandwidth savings to pay back the higher encoding costs and what the net savings look like at scale. The Frame Viewer combines visual and metric analysis, allowing engineers to navigate to any frame, zoom in on detail areas, and switch between files during live playback with bitrate, frame type, or quality metrics synchronized to the current position.

SLC Bitrate Explorer is available now for Windows and Mac. A 14-day free trial provides full access. After the trial, a free tier includes File Intelligence, File Compare, Bitrate Charts, and Frame Viewer with still image support. A full license is $109.
