S-VHS

Using the VHS cassette form factor, S-VHS split the video signaling into two parts: luminance and chrominance (see S-video for more detail). S-VHS did not catch on as a consumer player format, but it was popular with professionals as a more cost-effective option than Beta SP. VHS tapes can be correctly played in S-VHS decks but the converse is not true.
