FourCC

Acronym:Four Character Code

A sequence of four bytes or characters, unique to each mime type. First used in Apple's Macintosh operating system and subsequently used in a variety of video players and internet browsers to allow proper handling of content types. FourCC examples for video compression include DivX, Xvid, and H.264.
