Adobe Primetime Brings DRM Protection to HTML5 Firefox Browsers

Digital rights management (DRM) is finally coming to HTML5 browsers, and Adobe is behind it. Adobe announced that the Primetime platform now supports DRM in Mozilla Firefox HTML5 browsers. Additional browser support will come later this year, said Kelash Kumar, group product manager for Adobe Primetime.

The news is a first for HTML5 browsers, and should help premium video transition to HTML5. The news comes with a big customer win: Netflix will use Primetime DRM to stream to Firefox HTML5 browsers.

"Adobe Primetime DRM adds to the suite of DRM products we use which allow us to deliver great movies and TV shows across numerous platforms," says Anthony Park, vice president of engineering for Netflix.

Adobe also announced that it's working with Intel to add content protection to video hardware. As 4K video takes off, studios are asking for additional levels of protection. Adobe has been working with chipset vendors and is now adding Intel to a lineup that also includes Broadcom and AMD. Adobe Primetime DRM is now a core part of the reference design kit (RDK) for online television created by the pay TV industry. That RDK will create a framework for set-top boxes and will let pay TV companies standardize content protection.

“Our technology collaboration with Adobe enables us to offer a hardware DRM solution that delivers a high level of content protection while preserving device performance,” says Christos Georgiopoulos, vice president of Intel's Software and Services Group.
