Vimeo Gets Own Roku Channel

Today, Vimeo will become the fiftieth public channel available to owners of Roku set-top boxes. To view it, customers will need to open the Roku Channel Store and select the Vimeo channel.

Viewers will be able to do more than just scroll through Vimeo videos, however. If they have a Vimeo account, they'll be able to link to it and watch their own videos through their television. They can also use Vimeo's new Watch Later feature on the website in order to make a queue of videos they want to watch when they get the chance.

Owners of an HD Roku box and an HD television will be able to stream videos at HD quality. According to Roku PR, roughly 20 percent of Vimeo content is high-definition.

This agreement makes over 97 percent of the content on Vimeo available to Roku users, says Roku PR.

The announcement coincides with Vimeo's rollout of a new HTML5-based video player, which works on Apple's mobile devices.

Roku has sold over a half-million set-top boxes, the company announced in mid-January. Roku won't say how many are in active use. The company also won't comment on how many users view Netflix content exclusively on their Roku boxes and how many explore the other channels.

"Vimeo is synonymous with the best that independent video creators have to offer, and giving Roku customers access to this quality entertainment in high definition further enhances the overall Roku experience," says Jim Funk, vice president of business development for Roku, Inc. "We think of our Roku customers as a community of like-minded video enthusiasts who are looking for great value and great entertainment. Vimeo will be a great addition for Roku customers."
