Netflix and Univision Partner for 'Reverse Syndication' Deal

In what's being called a reverse syndication arrangement, Univision will air two of Netflix's original series. Univision will run the first season of Netflix's Narcos later in 2016. Narcos is a crime drama about the hunt for Colombian drug kingpin Pablo Escobar. Season 2 will debut on Netflix later this year.

Additionally, season one of the Spanish-language Netflix series Club de Cuervos will air on UniMas, a Univision network for younger viewers. Club de Cuervos is a comic drama about a football club in Mexico. It's been approved for a second season, but Netflix hasn't yet said when that will start.

This deal is a first for Netflix, which has always been on the other end of syndication agreements. The partnership shows the strength of Netflix's original content, and should attract new subscribers by giving them a taste of the SVOD's content.

"Promoting these original shows on Univision is a great way to further reach Hispanic audiences and help them discover Netflix,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the New York Times reports that Univision is only paying residuals to the performers and Netflix isn’t paying anything for the promotion. Univision made the announcement at its upfront presentation in New York City.

Netflix and Univision will also work together on a drama about Mexican drug kingpin "El Chapo." That series will debut on UniMas in 2017, and on Netflix after that.
