Connected TV Use Will Increase in 2016, Set-Top Boxes to Decline

It's prediction time, and video optimization specialist Conviva has made its bets on what the new year will bring. It released its final viewer experience report for 2015 today, which included these predictions for the year ahead:

  • Connected TV use will increase and set-top box use will decline. Sorry, Apple and Roku, but Conviva says viewers will trade their boxes for the convenience of connected TVs.
  • TV viewing will increasingly go online. Viewers will appreciate the on-demand nature of online viewing and will increasingly stream their favorite shows. There won't be much change in how they watch live programming or movies, however.
  • Premium video streamers will turn away from their in-house delivery networks in 2016 and sign with CDNs. Conviva expects the biggest players to build their own CDNs.
  • Many streamers will sign with multiple CDNs, marking one as their primary and another as their secondary, all in the name of delivering a flawless viewing experience.
  • While there's not much video streaming right now in the 5Mbps-and-up bit range, that will change toward the end of 2016.

Conviva's report is also full of stats on viewing trends from 2015. Views for episodic streamed video grew this year, from 19 percent of total views in 2014 to 23 percent. Views for short-form content fell from 62 percent to 56 percent. Views for movies (6 percent) and live events (15 percent) were flat.
