CES 2012: Sharp TVs Get Smart with Content Hub
LAS VEGAS—CE manufacturer Sharp, which claims to be the market leader in large-screen TVs at 60-inches and larger, has launched its own hub, SmartCentral, which it will incorporate into most of its 20 new TVs to be released in 2012.
SmartCentral includes access to Hulu, YouTube, Netflix, and Facebook. Another smart feature is Beamzit, a free media-sharing app that allows users to wirelessly send photos, music and video to a Sharp Aquos Wi-Fi enabled set from their IOS or Android smart phone or tablet.
The flagship, Aquos Quattron 3D LED TV (LC-80LE844U) to be released in April, is an 80-inch unit with a new 240Hz LCD panel to virtually eliminate blur during fast-moving video. The unit also boasts Wi-Fi, 4 HDMI inputs, and the new SmartCentral user interface.
The SmartCentral functionality will further be extended into Sharp's two new models of Blu-ray players, launching this spring.
Along with other manufacturers Sharp is moving beyond HD, bringing to market a 4K display later this year and showing in prototype on its stand is an 8K 85-inch display. This represents 32 million pixels of resolution or 16 times the resolution of HDTV.
