Miramax Offers Movie Streaming on Facebook with App
Joining Warner Bros., which was the first major studio to experiment with offering streaming movie rentals through Facebook, Miramax has now created its own Facebook app.
The Miramax eXperience app offers 20 titles for rent in the United States, and 10 in the United Kingdom and Turkey. Movies rent for 30 Facebook credits each, or about $3.
Titles available to U.S. renters include Chicago, Clerks, Trainspotting, and Good Will Hunting, as well as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill (1 and 2), and From Dusk Till Dawn (good news for Quentin Tarantino fans).
Miramax broke the news on its blog. The app is launching in beta, and offers social features that tie it into the larger Facebook community. Users can Like and discuss the movies. Renters aren't limited to computer playback, as the app will stream to multiple devices, including iPads and connected TVs. The app was built with Ooyala and AllDigital.
While Miramax is only offering rentals with the app now, Miramax CEO Mike Lang notes in the blog entry that he eventually wants to create a cloud-based digital locker system.
Facebook users can download the app here to try it out.
Content owners can now rent or sell directly to Facebook's 750M monthly visitors.
The social networking giant wants to connect its members with video creators, rather than making its own programs.
Deal will bring a rotating selection of Miramax titles to Netflix's Watch Instantly service.
Movie distribution trial brings popular new releases to the most-trafficked social networking site.
The studio is starting small, with one title, but will expand with additional purchases and rentals.
