Soliton show casing the new Zao-S at NAB 2017 in Las Vegas

Soliton Systems, the lead manufacturer of mobile video contribution using H.265 encoding over the 3G or 4G mobile phone cellular network, announces they will be showcasing the Zao-S at this year’s NAB show in Las Vegas.

Japan, Tokyo(21 Mar 2017)

The NAB show is well known for technology companies to show case their new innovative products in the broadcast field, and this year it will be no exception for Soliton Systems. The new highly anticipated Zao-S is a miniature encoder, weighing only 400 grams, that provides live video streaming direct from the camera to anywhere in the world. Ideal for news gathering, sports production and other live outside broadcast events, it is much lower cost and less resource intensive than traditional RF or Satellite Systems.

The new Zao-S with its miniature size, starts a new innovative dimension to mobile encoders providing live streaming on-location. The fact it is the next generation after H.264, and given it is not much bigger than an iPhone, the new Zao-S breaks all the boundaries of traditional mobile encoders for live streaming and video contribution that are normally carried in a separate backpack by journalists.

“Overcoming the technical challenges of fitting so much processing power into such a small unit has been monumental” stated Shinya Hyakutake, Head of the Broadcast Division for Soliton in Japan. “Despite its size, it will work better than many of its competitors that are 4 times the size, twice the price and only H.264.”

The advantages of H.265 over H.264 are numerous. H.265 encoding, also known as HEVC, provides a better compression technique of over 50%. This efficiency means quality video can be delivered on half the traditional bit rate over the wide area network, meaning much more reliability, especially on mobile phone networks where service levels cannot be guaranteed. Latency is also typically much lower making it ideal for 2-way news interviews so the uncomfortable pauses of live TV are much reduced.

Hyakutake, continues “At NAB in Las Vegas we will be showing the Zao-S in action. Its size will open up new applications that were previously impossible, and its cost allows for smaller organisations to acquire it where in the past this type of technology was cost prohibitive.”

For people wishing to see the Zao-S, attendees of NAB should make their way to the Soliton stand at South Hall Upper SU4910 for a live demo of the Zao systems.
