Nordic Broadcasters and Distributors to Debate at Northern Waves

Key leaders from Broadcasters and Pay-TV Distributors plan to meet and debate collaboration topics at the Northern Waves TV Conference planned on the 23rd of May 2019. The heads of Canal Digital, Discovery Networks Norway, Riks TV, Com Hem, and Telia are will be on the panel in the this year’s TV tech and business event.

One of the highlights at Northern Waves, the Oslo TV Tech and Business conference, will be the Leadership Panel: Cooperation without Competition that is scheduled during the afternoon sessions. An introductory presentation is planned to be made by Mr. Henke Erichsen, CTO & CIO of Canal Digital, a leading Pay TV operator in the Nordics owned by Telenor.

The session will also include the CEO of Discovery Norway, Ms. Tine Jensen, and CEO of Norwegian DTT operator Riks TV that has also launched a new linear OTT TV streaming service called Strim. Heads of the TV business units of Com Hem in Sweden, Jessica Andersson, and Telia Norway, Espen Åtland, will also join the panel discussion.

Northern Waves TV aims to become the platform for the TV industry to meet, network and cooperate on key technology and business areas of premium streaming services. The topics this year will range from investments of TV content hosting platforms, Android TV deployments, Broadcaster D2C services, and ad insertion within Pay TV distributor services.

On the technology and hosting front, while all operators currently manage unique and separated platforms to serve content on OTT streaming services, the panelists will discuss how the TV industry can invest to utilise common platforms. The common unified platform discussion will include hosting and storage of linear TV, catch-up, and VOD content, most of which is the same across all competing distributor services.

The debate will include topics on how the broadcasters and Pay TV operators plan to collaborate with the introduction of digital advertisements within streaming Pay TV services. The agenda also covers the topic on how the streaming service owners plan to share and control the user data and information that may be needed for use between operators and broadcasters. Who owns the user?

The conference, which is hosted by Norwegian TV tech solution provider Norigin Media, will organise the panel discussion along with other key presentations from leading broadcasters and operators that include ITV (UK), Deutsche Telekom (Germany), DR (Denmark), Elisa (Finland), Telia and TV2 (Norway).
