EdgeCast Adds Full HTTP Streaming For iOS4 Devices

Live and on-demand streaming now available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch

Santa Monica, CA(18 Nov 2010)

EdgeCast Networks, the world’s fastest and most reliable content delivery network (CDN), today announced full support for HTTP live and on-demand streaming to the Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. Today’s announcement includes full support for Apple’s new iOS 4, keeping EdgeCast well-positioned to meet surging marketplace demand for streaming to millions of Apple devices.

“Supporting video on demand and live streaming to iOS devices builds on our commitment to ensuring that our customers can deliver content to any user regardless of their format, location, or device,” said Ted Middleton, vice president of product management at EdgeCast Networks. “This further extends the evolution of streaming technology to new HTTP-based formats which bring increased quality, superior user experiences, and new monetization opportunities. And we remain as focused as ever on making sure it is as quick, easy, and painless as possible.”

Whether streaming audio or video, live events without proprietary server software, or sending secure on-demand content with full encryption and authentication, the tandem of Apple and EdgeCast technologies means companies can deliver at very high speed to users of Apple’s family of portable devices.

EdgeCast iOS 4 support includes intelligent dynamic stream technology, which is supported by the media player built into Apple devices. Intelligent dynamic stream selection lets an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch automatically switch between different bit rates depending on the device’s current connection speed. By switching bit rates on-the-fly as network conditions change, users are far more likely to enjoy a clear and uninterrupted viewing experience, whether connecting through EDGE, 3G, or Wi-Fi.

With this announcement, EdgeCast streaming customers can now stream to all Apple iOS 4 devices. While streaming media to some of the world’s most popular consumer devices is very appealing, doing so via a powerful global CDN brings significant competitive advantages. EdgeCast’s intelligent global load balancing automatically routes users to the streaming server fastest for them. This ensures that Apple device users receive an optimal experience, free of interruptions relating to network congestion or long distances between viewers and content servers.

HTTP streaming for Apple devices is available to EdgeCast customers immediately for both live and on-demand content. To learn more, visit the company’s Streaming to Apple Devices page at: http://www.edgecast.com/services/streaming/apple.
