Creating a GIF in Vimeo

In this quick tutorial, Stjepan Alaupovic explains how to make embeddable and shareable GIFs from your client videos using Vimeo's new GIF creation feature.

Vimeo offers a lot of cool features that do the work for you, and they recently added GIF creation capability. For a video editor, using their GIF process is a fun way to create an extra asset that you can deliver to a client to use for social media, digital ads, and other platforms across the web.

Previously, creating a GIF required Photoshop skills or using a third-party online. Vimeo has simplified the process by allowing users to select a section of their video and convert it to a GIF format.

Creating the GIF

Here's how the GIF process works:

  1. To begin, upload your video to Vimeo.
  2. After uploading, navigate over to the video settings for the video you'd like to create a GIF from.
  3. On the left-hand side, click the GIF icon, followed by the Create GIF button.
  4. After a small GIF Editor appears, choose the segment your video you'd like to loop. The tool allows you to create a GIF that is six seconds in duration. Adjust the GIF selection by using the handles and trim tools and the timeline editor under the video preview. As you move the handles, a new preview is displayed that automatically loops and plays your GIF selection. You can also manually dial in your time settings by using the start and end drop-down areas near the bottom.
  5. Once you have a selection finalized, select the Create GIF button. This will open up another small window that will show Vimeo processing and creating the GIF. This may take a few minutes.

Sharing the GIF

Upon completion, you'll see a few options under the Share dropdown.

  1. You can download the GIF locally, copy a link or embed the GIF for use in an email. When downloading the GIF, your system may not recognize the format or loop the video. You can try viewing your GIF via a web browser by dragging the GIF into the browser.
  2. From here, you can upload the GIF to social media, share it, embed it into email newsletters, or take it into other editing applications like Photoshop and add titles or graphics.

Overall, this is a fun way to repurpose some of your existing videos on Vimeo and use them in a different way.
