In this review, we'll look at Blackmagic Design's 7" 12G Video Assist. Like the 5" and 3G models in the Video Assist line, this compact monitor-recorder is designed to go out into the field and attach to the camera, rig, or tripod. It allows you to see your shot better than a small viewfinder or pop-out LCD that's rarely larger than three four inches on most pro camcorders. The Video Assist also enables you to record your footage in high-quality ProRes or HD|NX at resolutions up to 4Kp60.

Think of the Canon XF605 as a high-performance sports car among everyday sedans. Both will get you there, but one definitely will enhance the trip with more useful features. If you're worried about the premium price of the XF605, I would still argue that while it may take another two or three jobs to pay it off, you will be happy with the results you get from it.

If issues arise with the video you capture, high-quality audio will go a long way to compensate for it. Viewers will often tolerate subpar video, but no one in the world will watch video with absent or poor audio. My advice to any streaming producer is to get the best audio setup you can afford for your video rig. It's always worth the investment.
