Tutorial: Creating Organic Transitions in Adobe After Effects

While there are many built-in transitions available within Adobe After Affects and Premiere Pro, there may come a time where you want to organically create something to switch from one piece of video to another. This tutorial will demonstrate 3 ways to do this in After Effects.

Animating the Arrow Image

Last, we'll create one more transition with the arrow image I mentioned earlier. We've already added the large arrow (Figure 16, below) to the After Affects timeline. Now, we'll animate the position of the arrow to wipe from left to right.

Figure 16. The arrow we'll work with. Click the image to see it at full size.

Open the position values by selectin the arrow and pressing P. Enable the key frames by selecting the clock button and drag the X value so that the arrow starts off screen. Next, move ahead to the 1-second mark and drag the X value to the right so that the arrow goes off screen to the right. Add the Easy Ease options to both keyframes.

Now, we'll duplicate the arrow and reverse the position keyframes. Once again, press P in the duplicated arrow and draw the bounding box around the keyframes as described earlier, then right-click, go to Keyframe Assistant and select Time-Reverse Keyframes. Next, select the duplicated arrow layer and press R to open the Rotation properties (Figure 17, below). Here we'll change the right value to 180 degrees so that the arrow is reversed.

You can preview this in After Affects and then import this into Premiere Pro like we did with the other transitions. As you can see, there are several ways to use color solids, or shapes, to create your own organic transitions.
