Content House KTRL Media Uses ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO and Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro

Created as a new form of production facility, KTRL classifies itself as a content house, able to produce in multiple formats for today's modern creative.

Blackmagic Design today announced that creative streaming production company KTRL Media uses the ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO live production switcher and Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro for streaming and broadcast production within the studio, as well as DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software for editorial and finishing.

Created as a new form of production facility, KTRL classifies itself as a content house, able to produce in multiple formats for today’s modern creative. “The models, distribution and ways of creating are constantly changing,” said Chief Creative Eugene Michael Santiago. “KTRL believes art consumed as content is a moment, an exclusive moment that can become immediately inclusive with the current technology of today.”

Technical Producer Henry Zaballos, who is also the chief cinematographer for KTRL, has built the system to be a versatile and streamlined production space. “The intention is that a wide variety of both streaming and recorded video can be produced, currently ranging from live comedy and music shows to cooking and presenter formats, along with podcasts and live events,” said Zaballos. “We want to be able to accommodate a uniquely wide variety of shooting and broadcasting scenarios, including an expansion into gaming and its unique streaming space.”

To accomplish this, Zaballos constructed a streamlined Blackmagic Design workflow, starting with the ATEM Television Studio HD8 ISO switcher. “As I began to understand the breadth of our technical requirements I quickly came to the conclusion that only Blackmagic Design, and specifically the ATEM line of products, could fit those needs,” continued Zaballos. “My experience with multi camera work in the traditional cinematography space has always been that it necessitates larger crew sizes than we wanted for KTRL. Our goal was to be nimble and able to change our studio system design on a dime.”

In addition to live switching, Santiago is particularly excited about the ISO functions of the switcher, which records each input as a separate file as well as the switched program output, and creates a DaVinci Resolve project file pre constructed with the switched content. “The sheer amount of editing hours that can be saved by the ISO functionality for any broadcast style recording is impressive,” said Zabellos, adding, “The DaVinci Resolve integration with ISO recording has only begun to show just how fruitful this workflow will be to our speed.”

The KTRL Media system includes three Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro units, mixed with a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K digital film camera. Zaballos chose the ATEM Microphone Converter, which converts four analog XLR inputs into MADI, to streamline audio recording as well. “The ATEM Microphone Converter specifically has allowed me to reduce several long cable runs to a single MADI line for our podcast studio. Once I fully understood the potential of that product I was so happy that it existed,” added Zaballos.

Extensive plans to expand content creation and delivery are made more efficient with the entire Blackmagic Design workflow. “As we begin rolling out our live concerts, live comedy, live studio pods and our gaming, the system we built with Blackmagic Design equipment will allow us to deliver unparalleled streaming content to audiences,” said Santiago. “The exclusivity of being at an actual event with your favorite artists, or next to your favorite gamer, we will now make inclusive. It's truly one of the most impressive things I've seen in such a quick and affordable package. I'm beyond impressed and over the moon how the Blackmagic products are able to provide such powerful versatility.”
