NAB Interview: Canon's Chuck Westfall on the Canon XF205 Pro Camcorder

Almost Live with Streaming Media reports from NAB 2014 with an up-close look at the new Canon XF205 Pro Camcorder.

Streaming Media Producer contributing editor Shawn Lam and Canon Technical Adviser Chuck Westfall met at NAB 2014 to discuss the Canon XF205, a new compact pro camcorder model that provides a higher-end, more richly featured stablemate to the XA25 and succeeds the widely used, HD-SDI-equipped, MXF-capable XF105.

The new model delivers the 20x optical zoom and dynamic image stabilizer of 2013's Streaming Media Best of NAB-winning XA25, but supports not only MP4 recording (like the XA25) but also 50Mbps, 4:2:2 MXF, broadcast-ready recording. Hence the "XF" designation. The XF205 also adds 3G-SDI to the XA25's HD-SDI, plus Genlock and timecode.

"It also uses the same heavier battery as the 105 series, which will last longer in the field," Westfall says. "There's also dual-band WiFi--both input and output--so in addition to FTP transmission, you also have the ability to do browser remote control. Coming in with a smartphone or tablet, live preview, and all your camera controls."

Here is the full press release on the Canon XF205 and the simultaneously released XF200.
