John Ross Talks Laurel Canyon Live

Laurel Canyon Live's John Ross discusses the vision, mission, and workflow of a new live streaming facility that will operate at the nexus of live performance and narrative-driven music video in this interview with Streaming Media Producer's Steve Nathans-Kelly.

Today I spoke with John Ross, president of Laurel Canyon Live, a new state-of-the-art livestreaming venue built—as the name suggests—in a fabled Hollywood Hills enclave that once counted Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Frank Zappa, and other luminaries of the L.A. music scene of the sixties and seventies among its denizens. True to the spirit of musical innovation long associated with the Laurel Canyon scene, Ross says Laurel Canyon Live took shape with an ambitious creative vision in mind. Plans to build Laurel Canyon Live predate the pandemic, and the need for alternative means of delivering live music and connecting bands and their fans that COVID-19 has thrust upon the music industry.

With its dynamic virtual backgrounds, Unreal Engine-boosted ability to create visual narrative and immersive experiences, its Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6 G2 cinematic cameras, and Dolby Atmos sound, Laurel Canyon Live has been purpose-built to bridge the world of live performance and music videos, to create engaging visual and aural experiences that add narrative shading to the vibrant dynamism of live shows. In the interview, John explains how it all came about, what the workflow looks like from pre-production to post, and what fans can expect when artists collaborate with Laurel Canyon Live to bring their creative visions to life.
