LongTail Video Introduces Longtail.tv, Strikes Deal with AOL

LongTail Video, a self-serve video company and home of the popular JW Player, has introduced a cloud-based offering called LongTail.tv. The new service includes a both a cloud version of the JW Player and a content library, and is intended to drive revenue through video views.

The cloud-based player is meant to be easy to configure through a simple wizard, and, naturally, there's nothing to download and install. It plays both Flash and HTML5 video.

That's only half the story, though, as the free content library gives site owners videos they can show (and earn revenue from) immediately. The library includes millions of premium titles thanks to syndication partners such as AOL's 5min Media. Sites can also show videos from YouTube, although they can't serve ads on that content.

The new offering has been in private beta for over a month with over 300 publishers. It's now available as a public beta.

"LongTail.tv solves three problems facing our customers," says Dave Otten, co-founder and CEO of LongTail Video. "First, it dramatically simplifies the process by which users can go-live with the JW Player.  With only a few clicks, users can customize and embed the JW Player for playback on any device. This is a big deal for customers who have less technical know-how. Second, it provides users in search of video titles with a straightforward way to access and publish a variety of premium content via our gallery.  And third, it offers publishers with a clear economic model where they can generate revenue from video they stream on their sites."
