Online video platform Brightcove announced today that it's been chosen by Screen Media Ventures to support Popcornflix.com, an ad-supported free online movie site that launched last month.

The movie site will use Brightcove to serve movies to a variety of mobile devices. Popcornflix.com is planning to expand to connected TVs and set-top boxes in the future, and will use Brightcove then, as well, to deliver the same ad-supported experience to its viewers.

While it started small, Popcornflix.com plans to include over 1,000 movies in its library by the end of the year. As StreamingMedia.com noted when Popcornflix.com launched, the site currently has plenty of movies with A-list stars, but they're almost exclusively little-known titles.

"Popcornflix is focused on streaming movies in the highest quality digital resolution possible to ensure we are providing the optimal viewing experience for all of our visitors," says Gary Delfiner, senior vice president of digital distribution for Screen Media Ventures. "Brightcove sets the standard for high quality in the video industry. The range of options the company offers for delivering ad-supported long-form content across multiple platforms makes this an ideal partnership both now and in the future."

Interesting site but there are some problems using a player-only OVP like Brightcove or Ooyala that is separate from the video site itself. For example, I did not see any results returned from popcornflix.com on a Google Video search for these films. Perhaps the popcornflix webmaster has not created a video sitemap ... but if they had gone with an end-to-end video platform like VidCaster or 23video that would all work out of the box.
